Rugged Tactical Pole Camera for Confined-Space, Over-Barrier, and Standoff Reconnaissance

TACTICAL POLE CAMERA

The Tactical Pole Camera is a compact, field-deployable Remote Visual Inspection (RVI) and surveillance system designed for police, security, law-enforcement, and military reconnaissance tasks in confined, elevated, and standoff inspection scenarios.

The system integrates a dual-mode visible-spectrum drone-type camera with color/black-and-white switching, a long-wave infrared thermal imaging sensor, high-intensity visible and infrared illumination, a telescoping carbon-fiber pole assembly, an integrated control handle, an attached display unit (wrist-mounted, pole-mounted, and wireless remote display options are available), and an omnidirectional microphone for synchronized audio capture.

SYSTEM DESIGN AND MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Extremely compact dimensions, controlled mass distribution, and a ruggedized enclosure allow the Tactical Pole Camera to be operated reliably in confined spaces, over barriers, and under harsh operational conditions. The camera head incorporates polycarbonate composite, aluminum, and unidirectional carbon fiber housing for mechanical durability and resistance to oils, saline solutions, dust, and moisture. The telescoping pole is constructed from high-density unidirectional carbon fiber with friction-locking or twist-collar locking sections, enabling rapid one-handed deployment and collapse. The control handle is sealed against weather ingress, while the camera head meets IP67 ingress protection requirements.

The system is battery-powered using either CR123 primary cells or a rechargeable Li-ion battery pack with integrated fuel-gauge indicator, supporting field operation without external power sources. A secondary external power option is available for extended deployments.

TACTICAL POLE CAMERA IMAGING CAPABILITY

The Tactical Pole Camera employs a dual-sensor imaging architecture, combining a drone-type high-resolution visible-spectrum CMOS image sensor (camera module) with automatic color-to-black-and-white switching for low-light operation, and a long-wave infrared (LWIR) microbolometer sensor for thermal imaging. The visible-spectrum sensor provides daylight color imaging and switches to monochrome mode under low-light conditions, with sensitivity bolstered by integrated 950 nm near-infrared illumination. The LWIR sensor operates across the 8 μm to 14 μm spectral band, producing thermal imagery independent of ambient illumination. Both video streams are simultaneously available to the operator in dual-view mode, supporting visible/thermal fusion for precise target identification.

Illumination is provided by high-intensity white LEDs (3000 K) and 950 nm infrared LEDs integrated at the camera head, with 0–100% adjustable intensity. This configuration enables visual inspection in pitch-dark environments with either covert (IR-only) or overt (white-light) illumination.

Key imaging parameters include:

  • Color and black-and-white visible-spectrum imaging with automatic mode switching
  • HD CMOS sensor up to 1280 × 720 pixels at 30 fps
  • LWIR thermal sensor (8 μm to 14 μm) with selectable white-hot / black-hot polarity
  • Forward-viewing optical configuration with motorized pan articulation (±120°)
  • Horizontal field of view: 70° (visible) / 51° (thermal)
  • Digital zoom up to 32× with optional 10× / 30× optical zoom modules
  • Viewing capability up to approximately 30 m in complete darkness under IR illumination

Law Enforcement Pole Camera

DISPLAY, RECORDING, AND DATA MANAGEMENT

The control handle features an integrated LCD display (4.0-inch to 7.0-inch configurations available) with sunlight-readable adaptive brightness and an NVG-compatible filter, supporting real-time live view, playback, and system configuration. Optional 5-inch and 10-inch rugged tablet displays are available for pole-mounted, wrist-mounted, or chest-mounted operation. Brightness, contrast, illumination level, pan position, and zoom parameters are controlled through dedicated push buttons on the control handle and through the touchscreen interface on the display unit.

Wireless video transmission is performed over an AES-encrypted 5 GHz channel with WPA2-PSK authentication, supporting line-of-sight ranges up to 200 m. A hardwire interface providing Ethernet and USB connectivity is available for RF-restricted environments and for integration with ATAK, MANET, and Android-based command-and-control platforms. Multiple Tactical Pole Camera units can be monitored simultaneously through an optional network bridge accessory.

Data handling capabilities include:

  • Still image capture (BMP, JPEG, PNG)
  • Video recording with audio (MPEG-4)
  • Frame rate: 30 fps
  • Internal storage: up to 16 GB flash memory
  • External storage: 32 GB microSD card

ENVIRONMENTAL AND MILITARY-GRADE COMPLIANCE

The Tactical Pole Camera is qualified against multiple environmental and mechanical stress conditions in accordance with MIL-STD-810H, including vibration, shock, drop (4 ft minimum), humidity, high and low temperature, low pressure (high altitude), sand, dust, and thermal cycling. These characteristics support deployment in tactical, military, and law-enforcement field environments.

Operational temperature ranges:

  • Camera head: −20 °C to +50 °C
  • System operation: −20 °C to +50 °C
  • Storage: −20 °C to +60 °C

Police & Security Pole Camera with Audio Microphone

AUDIO ACQUISITION AT CAMERA HEAD

An omnidirectional microphone integrated at the camera head enables synchronized audio capture directly at the inspection site. The microphone supports audio pickup at extended distances, allowing the recording of environmental sounds during inspection tasks such as confined-space search, hostage negotiation support, security sweeps, and tactical reconnaissance. Audio is recorded together with video in standard digital format.

APPLICATIONS

The Tactical Pole Camera is suitable for:

  • Law enforcement RVI and covert surveillance
  • Police search and entry operations
  • Military reconnaissance and over-barrier observation
  • Hostage rescue and barricaded-subject scenarios
  • Confined-space inspection where personnel entry is restricted or hazardous
  • Standoff inspection of suspicious packages and vehicles
  • Border security and perimeter surveillance
  • Industrial NDT inspection in elevated or inaccessible areas

This system functions as a non-destructive inspection (NDT) and RVI tool where dual-spectrum (visible and thermal) imaging, extended reach, motorized articulation, encrypted video transmission, and synchronized audio capture are operationally required.
